He’ll be a laughing-stock, when the case comes on. He’ll never live it down. Put it over him properly, did pretty Liza. The things he said to her! And his face was a picture when my golden curls came off.’ The prisoner did not know that the man had died until I charged him with causing his death . . .

His real name is David Randall. He is known to us as a thief with a long criminal record, though he is only 26 years of age. Until the present case his robberies had been committed in country houses where he posed successfully as a housemaid. All his employers spoke highly of the qualities of their maid until ‘she’ vanished with their valuables. In criminal circles he is known by the nickname ‘Gracie’.’
